A home treadmill is a 500 to 3000 USD purchase that either becomes the most used machine in your house or the most expensive clothes rack. The difference is rarely luck. It comes down to matching five or six specs to how you will actually train, and ignoring the marketing numbers that do not matter. This guide walks through every spec in the order you should check it, with concrete thresholds for walkers, joggers and runners.
Start With Your Training, Not the Spec Sheet
Before comparing models, answer three questions honestly. Every recommendation below branches off these answers.
- What is the fastest you will realistically go? Walking tops out around 6-7 km/h, jogging at 8-11 km/h, structured running at 12-16 km/h. Do not buy for the sprinter you might become in five years; buy for the next two years, with a small margin.
- How many hours per week will the machine run? A single walker doing 3 sessions of 30 minutes stresses a treadmill far less than two runners logging 6 hours a week between them. Total weekly hours drives motor and deck requirements.
- Who is the heaviest person who will use it? Frame ratings are set around the heaviest user, not the average one.
If your plan is mostly incline walking, sessions like the 12-3-30 workout, a mid-range machine handles it easily and you can put the savings toward a better frame. If you are training for race paces at 14 km/h and up, almost every spec threshold below moves one notch higher.
Motor: Continuous Horsepower Sets the Floor
The motor is the heart of the machine and the first place cheap treadmills cut corners.
- Check continuous-duty horsepower (CHP), not peak HP. Peak numbers describe what the motor survives for a few seconds. CHP describes what it sustains for an hour. A “4.0 HP peak” motor is often a 2.0 CHP motor wearing makeup.
- Walking only: 2.0 CHP is enough.
- Jogging up to 11 km/h: 2.5 CHP minimum.
- Regular running at 12 km/h and above, or two users sharing the machine: 3.0 CHP or more.
- Heavier users (over 100 kg): add 0.5 CHP to whichever category applies. The motor works harder under load, and an undersized motor running hot dies years early.
A quick in-store test: stand on the belt, set it to 3 km/h, and listen as it starts moving under your weight. A properly sized motor pulls smoothly. An undersized one hesitates, whines, or surges before settling.
Deck Size: The Spec That Punishes Tall Runners
Belt dimensions decide whether the machine is comfortable or a constant tripping hazard.
- Length: 120-130 cm works for walking. Running with a normal stride needs 140 cm minimum, and anyone over 185 cm tall should look for 150-155 cm.
- Width: 45 cm is the floor for walking, 50 cm is comfortable for running, and 55 cm gives room for lateral drift during hard intervals when your form gets sloppy.
- Measure the belt, not the marketing. Some listings quote “running surface” including the plastic side rails. The number that matters is the belt itself.
Deck cushioning is harder to quantify from a spec sheet, but thicker decks (2 cm and up) with elastomer mounts absorb noticeably more impact than thin boards on rubber grommets. If you are coming back from knee or shin problems, cushioning deserves as much weight as the motor, and it pairs well with a structured comeback plan after injury.
Speed and Incline Range
Match the ranges to your training ceiling, then add a margin.
- Top speed: most home treadmills reach 16-18 km/h, which covers nearly everyone. Only buy a 20-22 km/h machine if you genuinely train sprint intervals; those models cost more because everything under the hood is built heavier.
- Incline: 0-12% motorised incline is the practical standard and covers almost every workout, from hill repeats to fat-loss walking. Incline is the cheapest way to make walking hard, so treat it as essential, not optional. A machine without motorised incline locks you out of half the useful home training library.
- Incline speed matters too. For interval work you want the deck to move from 0% to 8% in a few seconds, not thirty. Test it in the store if you can.
- Decline (-2 to -3%) is a nice extra for downhill race prep but not worth paying much for on a first machine.

Frame, Weight Capacity and Stability
A treadmill frame takes 1.5 to 2 times your body weight in repeated impact, thousands of times per session. Rigidity is not comfort, it is safety.
- Machine weight is an honest proxy for build quality. A 60 kg treadmill and a 95 kg treadmill at the same price are not the same machine. Heavier frames flex less, rattle less, and transmit less vibration through the floor.
- Max user weight: choose a rating at least 20-30 kg above the heaviest user. Manufacturers test to the printed limit; you want to live well below it.

- Handrail check: in the showroom, run at 12 km/h for a minute and grab the console. If it sways visibly, walk away, whatever the discount.

Connectivity: The Console Matters Less Than the Bluetooth
Console screens age badly. A tablet-sized display that looks impressive in 2026 will feel dated in three years, and subscription-locked consoles can turn into bricks if the service shuts down. What holds value is an open connection.
- Look for Bluetooth FTMS support (Fitness Machine Service) or at least a documented open Bluetooth profile. This is the difference between a treadmill you control from any app and one welded to a single vendor’s ecosystem.

- Avoid mandatory subscriptions. If core stats or speed control sit behind a monthly fee, the true price of the treadmill is the sticker price plus 120-480 USD per year, forever.
- Heart rate: built-in grip sensors are inaccurate at running intensity. Check that the machine or your app accepts a chest strap or watch broadcast instead.
Warranty, Noise and the Costs Nobody Mentions
The last 10% of the decision is where long-term regret hides.
- Warranty tiers tell you what the manufacturer believes. A solid home treadmill carries 10 years or lifetime on the frame, 5-10 years on the motor, and 1-2 years on parts and labour. A 1-year motor warranty on a “3.0 CHP” machine is the manufacturer telling you the truth quietly.
- Noise: footstrike at 10 km/h produces roughly 70 dB on most machines. Heavier frames and a 6 mm rubber mat cut the vibration that travels to neighbours. If you will run at 6 am in a flat, this is a primary spec, not a footnote.
- Delivery and assembly: treadmills weigh 60-120 kg boxed. Check whether delivery includes carrying it to the room, because “kerbside delivery” of a 100 kg box is a real problem on the day.
- Maintenance is on you. Every belt needs silicone lubrication roughly every 40 hours of use, and the deck needs regular vacuuming underneath. Budget 15 minutes a month and read up on how to lubricate a treadmill belt before the first squeak, not after.
- Power: a 3.0 CHP motor under a runner draws serious current. Give the treadmill its own wall socket, not a shared extension lead.

- Continuous horsepower: 2.0 CHP walking, 2.5 CHP jogging, 3.0 CHP running.
- Belt length: 140 cm minimum for running, 150 cm+ if you are over 185 cm tall.
- Belt width: 50 cm or more for running.
- Motorised incline to at least 12%, quick to adjust.
- Max user weight at least 20-30 kg above the heaviest user.
- Machine weight 80 kg+ if anyone will run on it regularly.
